Life By The Drop
5 October, 2005
Author: Mark Spencer
I look at the world and wonder,
Could there be a meaning for this?
Has man outlived his usefulness?
I look at my life and ponder,
Will there be a reason for me?
If so, what will my purpose be?
I look at my brother and question,
Has he forgotten how to love?
Greed is all he seems to think of.
I bow my head in prayer and ask,
How could you let it go so long?
You have to know something is wrong!
We’re all tired of living in fear,
Of facing this life by the drop!
Lord, is it ever going to stop??
I didn’t expect an answer.
I wonder if God even cares
Enough to listen to our prayers.
Then a child sat down beside me,
And said, “What answers do you seek?
What are these trials of which you speak?”
I shared my views about the world,
Wondering how it will survive.
Can we make it through this alive?
The child gave me a puzzled look.
“My son, you do not understand.
Everything you speak of was planned.”
“To know the nature of darkness,
To bring perspective to your sight,
You must see it without the light.”
“All of this was meant to happen.
These tribulations will bring strife.
In the end, all will lose their life.”
“Those who cling tightly to this world,
Will not be ready for the next.
One’s fate is what their choice reflects.”
“If you sit here and wonder why,
Never finding your solution,
You can’t make a contribution.”
“You already know your purpose,
Something God has let you sample.
His children lead by example.”
“Few will recognize salvation.
And if just one is saved through you,
Then you’ve done all that you could do.”
“God doesn’t ask for miracles,
You don’t have to reach for the sky.
All He asks you to do is try.”
The child got up and smiled at me,
Then joined the other kids at play.
With him, my fears drifted away.
Though the darkness is descending,
A future nobody can stop,
We must face this life by the drop.
My existence finds a purpose,
I have a destiny to meet,
Before my journey is complete.
