Thanksgiving Tradition
19 November, 2005
author: Rebecca Ditch-Hammack (aka Dreamer)
Sitting round the table
all dressed in holiday best
The family brought together
laughter heard from family jest
Then silence falls before us
as we lower our heads in prayer
giving thanks for bounties put before
and for the family; the company we share
The meal is a true blessing, each entree' passed around
Turkey, dressing, kapoosta, sweet potato pie,
Greenbeans, mash potatoes, gravy
plates piled high, with so much food to try
We feast till we can feast no more
feeling about to burst the seams
Then Grandpa tells his old days stories.
Fact or fiction, his face beams
When Grandma can take no more,
the ladies clear the dishes
Then grandma brings in her prize dessert
we ooh and aah and tell her how it all was so delicious
We sit around for several hours
sharing stories of recent events
kids nibbling on tasty hand made candies
For the holidays they have parents consents
And as the feasting day is ending
and we roll ourselves to the door
not realizing at that very moment
we were adding to the holiday lore

This is my memory of our family Thanksgiving tradition. Makes me feel the fullness just thinking about it. |
