For My Daddy
25 February, 2006
Author: Marion Carroll
I never had a Daddy, who held me on his lap,
who told me I was beautiful, or made me smile and laugh.
I never knew the joy of being "Daddy's Little Girl",
until now, never knew how much I need him in my world.
I have no one to run to, there's just no one around,
no one holds me when I'm trembling, no comfort to be found.
I have to find the answers by myself each time I cry.
I have to be reliant upon me, myself and I.
Daddy can you see me? Do you feel the pain I hide?
So many nights I reached for you and wished you hadn't died.
Will someone ever love me? Is my fate, to be alone?
Should I accept that my good heart, has never found a home?
I've always been the strong one; the one who gave the most.
I need my love to find another heart to be it's host.
I need to get some answers, I need to find out why?
Each time I dare to dream of love, it all becomes a lie.
My Daddy was a Captain in the United States Marines.
He fought and died in Vietnam. It haunts me in my dreams.
As he lay dying, did he feel the love we never shared?
For 40 years in Heaven, has he known how much I cared?
Each time I fall down on my knees, I allow myself to grieve,
then slowly raise my face to God, and ask that I receive,
the strength to find my purpose, the grace to heal my heart.
Then I stand tall, my head held high. I will not fall apart.
Daddy, I will make you proud; never will I fail
to honor your good memory, and follow on that trail.
If you can fight with honor and give your hallowed life,
then I can live with dignity, worthy of that sacrifice.
I'll be a good example, I'll always give my love.
I want you to be happy, when you see me from above.
You inspire me to be the best that I can be,
so people will remember you, whenever they meet me.
------- Author's Notes -------
Every time life kicks me down, I look to my father for the strength to carry on. He is my inspiration and my lifetime hero. Rest in peace, Daddy...I love you forever. |

Voting, jury duty, taxes, saying the "Pledge of Allegiance" and singing patriotic songs are the easy part. This poem is a beautiful tribute to your dad. I believe that he must have been a Great American. That goes for his daughter and grandson as well. |
