I’ll Try by Mark Spencer

A boy was on a baseball team
And he showed up every day.
But his coach had no faith in him,
So he rarely got to play.

It is not that he lacked the skills,
In fact, the boy was quite good.
He was simply not a winner,
He’d only do what he could.

When asked if he would like to play,
The boy would answer: “I’ll try.”
The coach said: “That’s not what I asked!
Will you play?” Was his reply.

He tried at everything he did,
Though, most often, he would fail.
Success does not come from trying,
But by doing, we prevail.

If you TRY to climb a mountain,
You are willing to concede,
That the mountain may be too great,
For your efforts to succeed.

In a marriage ceremony,
When you are asked to reply,
Though your response may be I do,
Do you really mean I’ll try?

The union which begins this way,
Almost always falls apart.
A marriage should not have to try,
When true love is in your heart.

We have been programmed for defeat,
That’s why couples often split.
When a task becomes difficult,
Those who only try will quit.

So the next time someone asks you
If you are ready to play.
You should think about your answer,
And be careful what you say.

If the coach does not put you in,
You won’t have to wonder why.
Some see things through unto the end,
While the rest will only try.

"There is no "Try". Only "Do". He was right. His English teacher, however, is rolling in her grave over his grammar, and the fact that so many have grown up with "Yoda Speak". Yea. Whatever. He got the message across, and so do you, Mark. Great Poem.
