Something From Nothing
8 August, 2006
Author: Mark Spencer
Sometimes I have to wonder
About those who claim to know
That life emerged from nothing,
Thirteen billion years ago.
When you try to envision,
The way nothing might appear;
Your every thought is something,
And the truth becomes quite clear.
Your mind can draw no reference,
Of what nothing truly means.
It cannot be imagined,
You can’t see it in your dreams.
Nothing is non-existence,
And that is the bottom line.
To get something from nothing,
One would have to be divine.
There is no gray area,
This debate cannot be torn.
From out of non-existence,
Universes can’t born.
So then why does time exist?
Why does death seem so routine?
Are we something or nothing?
There should be no in-between.
But time dictates existence,
Over everything we know.
It chooses our beginnings,
And allows each seed to grow.
Yet we return to nothing,
Rather, that’s how it appears.
Sentience is limited
To a set number of years.
But it isn’t logical,
That what exists be undone.
There is something or nothing,
There is life, or there is none.
If we know there is something,
Through what our senses perceive,
Then why is the eternal
Such a hard thing to believe?
If eternity exists,
Then why would sentience fail?
We are aware or we’re not,
Thought would never be so frail.
And if thought is eternal,
Don’t you think it’s kind of odd,
That we have such a problem
With believing there’s a God.
If we can ask such questions,
Even argue what is real,
Are you sure eternity
Couldn’t also think and feel?
Everything is energy
From the universe to you.
Energy does not vanish,
So what do you think is true?
Non-existence means just that.
What lies beyond is something.
Do you think it possible
To get something from nothing?

Bipedalguy (4.156.108.216) -- Tuesday, August 8 2006, 10:56 am I have been reading your poems recently, and it is obvious that you are truly a great poet. This is no exception. I recently heard a docmentary about new information relative to the God/No God argument. Scientific data gained with the help of the Hubble telescope seems to be have the atheists with their backs to the wall. Logic, probability and mathematics combined with the concept of randomness are supporting the conclusion that there has to be a supreme intelligece behind the creation of the universe. The odds against the atheist point of view appear to be trillions to one. I think it's kind of neet that science turns out to be the thing that affirms God. Faith is being reinforced by scientific fact. Your poem does a pretty good job in that regard. |

Megan (172.162.252.18) -- Sunday, August 13 2006, 08:31 pm That makes so much sense! You'd have to have the IQ of a doorknocker to believe all of this came from nothing!! Thank you! |
