Our Lord Speaks
18 September, 2006
Author: Mark Spencer
Our Lord speaks in many ways
Any mouth can turn His phrase.
You might hear Him on the breeze,
Though His word won’t always please.
Often those who hear His voice,
Let their pride decide their choice.
They seek lessons they can teach,
God has chosen them to preach.
But their hearing starts to dim,
When the message is for them.
They have been convinced by pride,
That they do not need a guide.
How effective can one be,
Who is led by vanity?
They will lead you to defeat,
Guided by their own conceit.
Jesus is the only word,
The Shepherd who leads the herd.
Let no man or woman say:
“Follow me, I know the way!”
Such a leader is miscast,
He who leads must first be last.
If to lead is what one seeks,
He can’t hear when our Lord speaks.

Megan (24.144.58.41) -- Friday, September 22 2006, 07:35 pm I can't tell you how many times I've encountered people like this. Ministers, pastors and priests who say "I know the way, follow me!" But not just them. Even the housewife, plumber, hairdresser, shoe salesman, or homeless man with the sign that says "Jesus is coming" have said this. We've got too many who want to lead, and not enough who are willing to follow. Great poem Mark. |
