Daughter Of The Man

Way up there, amongst the stars, he is a shining light;
A beacon in the darkness, to guide me through the night.

He died when I was only eight, and I didn't know it then,
but he would always be with me, just like he'd always been.

Denied the truth, I was unaware, yet he reached out from the grave;
and I was more than met the eye, from the gifts to me, he gave.

He was a Marine Hero, who fully lived his short life.
He was the finest example, and made the sacrifice.

Intuitively, I knew, despite the lies I was told.
One day I stood to claim as mine, his heritage so bold.

And then it all made perfect sense, why I'm the way I am.
I'm proud to take my place now, as the daughter of the man.

I'm just a fraction of him, but he gives me strength to be,
a woman of true substance, so he will be proud of me.

My Dad honored the wishes of the woman that he loved,
And left the fate of his daughter, in the hands of God, above.

But my heart had a cloud atlas, to find my real destiny.
His amazing soul lives on, through me and my progeny.

I have a long way to go, as I follow in his path.
I know he sees my efforts and all of the aftermath.

I have shed the weight of fear, and nothing can stop me now.
He was larger than life itself; I will be too, somehow.

Having been left without wings, I still learned how to fly.
My bridge, over troubled water, he'll be until I die.
