The Fabric Of Life
29 December, 2007
Author: Catyrose
Life is but a patchwork quilt
Created from remnants of the life she has lived
Swatches of fabric
At one time brand new, ever so lovely
Of bright and distinctive hues
With time, the cloth has begun to fade
Torn and tattered or so it would appear
To the untrained eye, the material is now old and worn
Yet with glasses adjusted, with the proper prescription
The quilt of one’s life defies all description
Taking a closer look one may see
Strands of silver intermingled with gold
Hues that are brilliant and often times bold
Reminiscent of triumph and success
Times in her life when she truly did her best
Yet some of the cloth is tattered and frayed
Symbolizing a life riddled with trial and pain
As the fabric unfolds, I see traces of tears
Shades of blue, gray, and black also appear
For at times, she has lived her life within the fabric of fear
With needle in hand, she re-arranges the pieces
Creating the final masterpiece of their lives together
This “fabric of life” is all she has left
Her years on this earth have been quite a few
This patchwork quilt is her final gift
To me and to you

Catyrose (128.123.84.125) -- Monday, December 31 2007, 03:45 pm for your kind words. I wrote this after a recent visit with my step-mom and dad who are in their late 80's. Mom is now disabled from a stroke and Dad has slowed down considerably. This was my tribute to them, especially Mom, for all the years of her life she devoted to raising me. |
shiloh (66.24.112.118) -- Monday, December 31 2007, 03:54 pm and you tell me that my writing is good? YOUR writing is beautiful! the use of the cloth and patches and colors to describe a life is both poetic as well as artistic, and very much an emotional description... very, very well done! peace... |

Tarna (75.16.233.157) -- Saturday, January 5 2008, 08:59 pm I really enjoyed the memory and the feelings evoked in this poem. The comparison of a family life and a quilt is perfect.. A matching of the memories good and bad. A fabric sometimes torn and faded fitting together creating something useful and good. Making a life of memories warm and securing and comfortable to wrap ourselves in is a perfect comparison. I miss those old quilts..:) great writing.. As always I truly enjoy your writing.. thank you for sharing them with us here. |
