That Evening, Back In May
7 May, 2008
Author: Shiloh
I can't believe it's been that long
since that evening back in may,
when I got tired of sitting around in my apartment,
and decided to take a chance
on something I'd seen in the paper,
called a "singles mixer" that was taking place at
"The Church Of What's Happening Now, Baby, Oh Yeah..."
over on Riverside Drive...
Wine and cheese furnished, two dollars admission, or was it three?
and there was quite a crowd of people there,
but for some reason I didn't feel out of place, like I thought I would,
and I wasn't nervous, like I thought I'd be,
and it was a comfortable evening, for the most part.
There were guys and gals there from all walks of life,
different backgrounds, different ages,
looking for different things, different relationships,
and they were all very upfront about it --
total honesty and no plastic faces, which was really refreshing.
We were broken up into groups, and each group had a room,
and in that room you talked about yourself and why you were there,
and you sort of went on from there,
having gotten an idea of what it was all about,
and maybe who you might like to talk with,
and I just sort of wandered around,
a little reluctant to put myself out there on the chopping block...
So there I was, wandering around, wondering what I was doing there,
and this girl calls out my name!? -- Whoa! Didn't count on that, at all.
She looked a little familiar, but her smile was the hook,
and her eyes were my kryptonite... she had me with her eyes.
Direct, unwavering, digging, demanding, if you will...
that I look at them, and that I pay attention to her.
So I did. What else could I do?
And actually, once I started talking with her,
it was all that I wanted to do...
that evening, that night, the next day, the next week...
for as long as she would let me, I wanted to pay attention to her.
That was thirty-one years ago today,
and three sons ago,
four or five dogs ago, five cats ago,
several cars ago, a few lawnmowers ago,
and an awful lot of problems ago,
and we've managed to hang in there no matter what,
which just goes to show that my decision to go to that singles mixer,
instead of some of the things I had considered that evening,
was the smartest thing I ever did in my entire life.
Because it made the rest of my life worth living.
