Taking Flight
18 May, 2008
Author: Catyrose
We took a walk tonight
The two of us eager to go out and play
A little relaxation we needed at the end of a very long day
You held the kite string in your tiny little hands
Struggling to figure out this rather intricate process
I longed to rush in and offer a hand
Yet you needed time to formulate your own plan
With the utmost difficulty
I stepped back in the shadows
As I let you go
Off you ran to and fro
Balancing the string between your hands
Attempting to figure out when to hold on
And when to let go
Isn’t something we readily know
The kite at first could not get off the ground
You reeled in the string and let it out
Trying to make an ascent into the evening sky
I hung back and gave you the opportunity to try
Ever so slowly as you took control of your very own string
It seemed like you had gotten the hang of this whole thing
I gazed at the look of delight as it spread across your face
As you ran across the grass at a frantic pace
The breeze picked up just then
All at once, your kite took flight
Amidst the back drop of a starry starry night
You wailed, “Look at me, look at me I can fly”
These few words brought a tear to my eye
Stubborn, so determined you have always been
You are a marvel my precious little friend
I never doubted for a moment that you would succeed
You taught me a lesson on allowing others to take the lead
Instead of rushing in like I usually do
I let go of the string, and left it up to you

barb (67.58.197.169) -- Monday, May 19 2008, 04:16 am I loved the way you describe teaching independence, common sense to help us learn we have to know when to let go.The ones that can't do anything isn't their fault they had everything done for them, by people that thought they we're helping.Good write Caty |
