What A Game

Our coach and manager had run off with the team’s money. But as luck would have it one of the guys on the team had the team’s equipment, you know the pads and uniforms. We called ourselves the Oakland Rams.

We had a commitment to play the third string of the San Francisco Forty-Niners and we were going to keep that promise. The game was to be played in an extinct stadium called Caesar Stadium.

A lot of the guy’s had quit the team. But at the last minute we found replacements. A policeman from Oakland, a barber from Berkeley, a longshoreman from Richmond, there were a few more but I just can’t remember who the\y were. We knew there would be pro. Scouts at the game, so we wanted to do our best.

The ball was kicked to me at the kick off, I caught it and looked to see which way to run, the policeman waved his arms and yelled this way, I ran in the direction he told me, I ran into a wall of monsters. When I was tackled I just laid on the grass and laughed.

When they had the ball, I played defensive back, a man that stood feet over me went out for a pass, I knew that he could out run me, so I tripped him. When he got up he waved his fist as he chased me all over the field. The referee kicked him out of the game. The last I heard him say was, I’ll get you for this.

When I was playing defensive back our guard told me that I was not doing it right. I said, how do you know? Your supposed to do your job, not watch me. We lost that game 99 to 0 we made more points on defense than we did on offense.

I left the stadium out the back door, left my uniform on and took a shower when I got home.
