sitting in a cold room
accompanied only by one person in a surgical mask and gloves
in a chair that looks like it belongs in a dental office
your mouth is dry
your palms sweat
you're tense
but you volunteered for this
so you're not afraid
just wrought with anticipation
your expectation builds with the unveiling of the tools
an array of what look like simple surgical tools
and a needle
your excitement rises up as they approach with the needle
your breath stops
but only for the moment the needle penetrates the skin
and as the needle is replaced with a piece of cold metal
you reach the highest high you can
the ultimate satisfaction
of modifying the body
just to pacify the mind
