Sloth
29 April, 2010
Author: Mark Spencer
Sloth is the root of many sins,
Of greed and envy too.
We lust for things that let us live
The way the lazy do.
And we are gluttons for this life,
A life of ease and play,
A world where every moment lived,
Is like a holiday.
We want to lounge around all day,
Without a single care.
And hobnob with celebrities,
In Brentwood and Bel Air.
But you will not find paradise,
Behind a gated wall.
The eyes of envy never rest,
You'll have no peace at all.
Because of this, your rage will burn,
There is no place to hide.
Though such attention also serves
To puff up someone's pride.
And sloth is what prepares the ground,
That sin may sow the seed,
Of pride and wrath, envy and lust,
Of gluttony and greed.
It is the root of all our wants,
To bear no burden's weight;
And live a life of luxury,
Behind our iron gates.
If we never face life's struggles,
Or work for our rewards,
If we avoid our earthly chores,
How can we face the Lord's?
For that is why each soul is here,
For their contribution.
But those who only serve themselves,
Gain no absolution.
This sin is like a great cocoon
That gives birth to the moth.
Of all the seven deadly sins,
The very first was sloth.
