Journeys

Author: C. Scott
We all take Journeys in our lives
Many of them include packing a bag and going on a trip
But, the most enlightening journeys
Can be when we simply go inside ourselves
So many times we are afraid to go on a journey inside ourselves
We're afraid of what we are going to find
Afraid we might not like what we see if we look too closely
But, if you never journey "inside your own head",
How can you truly ever know who you are?
We are all too happy to allow the world to define who we are
Allowing others to determine who we are and what we should do
That way we don't have to be too self-involved
And can "go on about our merry way"
There is nothing more dangerous than allowing others to define you
Allowing others the responsibility of determining what and who you will be
The journey inside oneself is something that cannot be left to others
It must be undertaken personally,
And it needs to be done periodically
It is not and easy thing to do,
To look inside yourself and determine if you like what you see
It is harder if, when you do look, you don't like what you find
That is when you find out what type of person you truly are
Do you accept the things you don't like, saying: "There's nothing I can do, this is just me?"
Or do you change what you find and become a better person for it?
That is a question that each person has to answer for themselves
And those answers cannot come until the journey is undertaken
And the questions are asked
Take the journey...
There is no packing required
Just the strength to look inside yourself
And determine if you like what you find
If you like what you find
You are well ahead of the game
If not, there is always time to do something about it
And become the person that you have always wanted to be.

Meridian (205.188.116.135) -- Saturday, June 12 2010, 05:02 pm I like your free verse. Sometimes I find that free verse is more powerful, if not as powerful, as a rhyming poem. I like that this is straightforward, simplistic and devoid of fancy wording. Great poem C. Scott! Self-discovery is deep! |
