Simple Pleasures
17 December, 2010

On hot summer days
When the only noise in the distance
Is a neighbor cutting their lawn
Or bicycle chains turning
I am reminded of my childhood
And all of its simple pleasures

Running after an ice cream truck
Or that first jump into the cold river
Endless ideas for castles in the sand
Or double-bouncing friends on a trampoline
Simple pleasures that now
In adulthood, often go ignored

But on certain days
When the wind is just a subtle breeze
And the day is busy, but tranquil at the same time
I am reminded of a time and place
When living in the moment was easy
When there were no bills to pay
No errands to run
No house to clean
And no car to fill

When something as simple as a butterfly
Could make you giggle with delight
And the sound of your mothers voice
Carrying across streets, calling you for dinner
Was your biggest hardship

Your best friend lived across the way
And they knew everything about you
There was no distrust
Just reciprocity in building forts
And chasing frogs
Having sleepovers
Eating too much candy
And watching scary movies

Simple pleasures
That are too often lost
But we can find them if we look
On a busy but tranquil day
Of our adulthood......

Just pure awesome

Wow! This is a great poem Pamela. I like this alot. I search and enjoy the simple things in life. The other day, I was sitting on my deck, in the sun and watching this spider in the web. Hours go by, and my wife said, "What are you doing? I'm watching the spider try and catch food. She said, "GET A JOB!" I kept enjoying that simple pleasure. Was so nice, like your poem.
