Sendai Bay

Author: Puppet
As the TV reported on
the flooding waves of Sendai Bay,
my visceral horror thrust me forward
into the images played on the screen:
I imagined myself in the car rushing
towards the countryside,
the dusty smell of panic playing
havoc on my calm. The cars in front are
stalled, the rear-view mirror terrified,
and suddenly I'm too slow to escape,
my legs too leaden, my mind too useless,
this goddamn technological advantage—
which should allow me to beat evolution
and life itself—
is pulling me back
holding me down
while all forces of the universe
barrel at me in blind omnipotence.
From the angle of the helicopter's sky,
this is a news item
viewed on youtube
and owned by associated press.
At ground level, this is God I am facing,
and never have I ever felt so
small.
It has already cast me of my metal casing,
and now comes adrenaline as I am
swallowed into Its billowing grey,
Its churning soup of digested coast,
and I fight for every second I can get.
For what is God but a metaphor
for all the forces of the world
that we can't understand
or control?
We are not created in Its image,
we are just created in It,
incubated and cremated in Its embrace.
Japan is flooded and shaken by God
as was Haiti and China before it,
as we all were before,
as we all will be after,
and reconstruction
and support
will be our prayers.
Because any questions of morality
or meaning
seem oddly empty when compared
to the sound of pounding footsteps drowned
by the rumble of Sendai Bay.
------- Author's Notes -------
This goes out to all the people in Japan and other areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami. |
