Be Me
29 May, 2011
Author: Meridian Zuriel
At one point
I wanted to be just like you
I wanted your brain
I wrote like you did too
I tried to smile like you did
So I could look as cute
I liked your style
So I copied you for a while
I didn’t like being me
I was too boring
You’re popular with the populace
The type of person people don’t go ignoring
I liked your hair
It’s straight and long
I wanted your voice, when I sang songs
Like you belong, I wanted to too
Whatever you wanted to do, I wanted to do
I followed you
Watched you
Liked your skin
Instead of the skin I was in
I wanted your teeth
Mine weren’t as white
I wished I was you
Now I’m all right
Now I’d rather pass
I’m starting to accept the things I can’t change
My flaws, my issues and all
At one point I wished to be tall
Just like you
But now I’m learning to be me
All I know is what I see
Just starting to consider the possibility
That there could be more than meets the eye
Role models are so hard to come by
Who knows? You might be going through
With no one having the slightest clue
You could be looking for a role model too
If you are, the best advice I can give you
As I encourage myself,
Is love you and realize your worth while on this Earth
And to thine ownself be true
