Ode To Tater

Yesterday I cried til I could cry no more
I had lost a little one I had so long adored
The first time I saw you, you were not alone
You were surrounded by others who needed a home
I had decided that 3 would be a good
Three little kittens with all different mittens
Your dad had told me 2 would be fine
But I had the number 3 on my mind
I had picked your 2 sisters before I picked you
I had almost decided your dad had been right
And 2 would be plenty to bring home that night
I just couldn't stop thinking, 3 was stuck in my head
I looked down again at the room full of kittens
And your eyes locked with mine, as if to say
"See look I have mittens, can I come home today?"
I swooped you up in my arms and took you all to the car
Put you all in the carrier and headed home, not too far
I placed the carrier on the bed with your dad
I unzipped and opened it waiting to see
The little heads popping out at daddy and me
You were the last one who ventured onto the bed
Daddy would hold you in one of his hands
And would walk you around place to place
You were so small and he was so big
You knew where he was you had to be safe
The years passed by and the joy that you gave
Could not match the love when you looked at my face
You loved chasing the laser and hunting for mice
You would run, jump and swivel, and do it over again
Five short years later, almost to the day
You went to your daddy and he knew right away
You didn't look good and you hurt when you moved
Dad woke me and said Tater is sick
I got up and got ready and made a call to the vet
They said come on over and we'll take a look
I thought you just had an infection to treat
My world caved in when the Vet looked at me
Her eyes told the story, her voice spoke so clear
You were not just sick, she said you would die
She said with some meds you might have a few weeks
I looked in your eyes and if you could speak
You would tell me " I you Love but Momma I'm weak
It hurts when I move and I don't like this pain
I love you for loving me and tell daddy the same "
As we waited together the time we would spend
Let me know you were right and your pain had to end
I told you we loved you and stroked you to sleep
As the Vet came and gave you your welcomed relief
I held you as a mother holds a baby adored
And cried a shower of tears as you passed through those doors
A place that was made for others like you
They were all sick and hurt and now feel like new
It's a place you will live til we meet again
It's a bridge that's named Rainbow
And when I show up, you will know when that moment comes
The circle of Life and Love never ends
It gets bent and broken and hearts have to break
And Showers of Tears have to fall
When the rain ends and dark clouds all clear
We will share kitty kisses when Rainbow Bridge finally is near
