Attention Overdone

I want them to look at me
I want them to see me
I want them to be concerned about me
I want their sympathy
I want them to feel sorry for me
I want their empathy
I want them to tolerate my pity party
I’m seeking attention
I want them to show that they care
But I don’t realize that
My pessimism is outweighing
My optimism
That I cry too much and want too much
Attention
I’m overdoing it with the sadness
Like I’m on Broadway playing a performance
It’s okay to want care and concern
But I can’t blame some people for being stern
Telling me to hold my head up
To stop seeking a kiss or a hug
To stop seeking a pat on the back
To stop acting, to stop crying in vain
To dress my wounds and nurse my sprain
And to refrain
From wanting people to support or carry me
To go on about my business merrily
Once I’ve dried my eyes and fixed my face
To act the adult I am
To act the age I am
To learn how to do things myself
Without seeking a lot of help
They aren’t mean
They don’t believe in leaving a friend alone
They just have enough problems of their own
Wishing I would stand up for me
And for once in my life to start acting grown
