Sweet Poison

Words don’t make me
Sticks and stones can
But folks can’t
Break me
I am what I say I am
I live by my own standards
My own qualifications
I live for me
Not for the world or the nation

I look in the mirror
If I don’t like what I see
No words from the superficial
No falsification
Can bewitch me
Don’t tell me what’s there
When it’s not there
Don’t tell me what I know
And I’m not vain or conceited
But I’ll be darned
If I let anyone validate me
Compliments are fine
But save the phony

Grapevine will always
Shoot out how you really felt
Bees buzz all the time
Birds are carrying messages
As we speak
About one’s true feelings about another
Whether they tweet in the
Ears of their friend or their mother
I ain’t mad at ya
I’d just rather you be real
Ain’t no big deal

I’m not pretty because you say I am
Neither am I ugly because you say I am
I am what I am because I say I am
Don’t need love’s stipulations
I can love just because I love
Love is power
It should have more watts than you show
Thirty-two teeth flashing in my face
And all the time you’ve got the
Characteristics of a foe
Words are sweet poison
Don’t think I don’t know
Once you’ve opened your mouth to someone
You’ve let yourself go

(Can’t blame your friend
When you’ve shot your own self in the toe)
