Love In Her Heart
19 September, 2013
Author: JMarshall
It lay there as it had for years
Now between mature breasts
Its golden arms encircling her neck
And fastened
Beneath hair soft as an angle’s wing.
The locket, opened nightly,
Holds the fading photo.
A handsome young soldier full of attitude,
Garrison cap cocked back and tilted
On a sea of thick black hair
Like a sailing vessel comfortably riding the waves
Of an incoming tide.
Eyes smiling with the appreciation
Of life,
And what it had given him
In her.
It rests there close to her heart,
That locket,
His promise to return,
Her promise to wait.
In a far away land
He counted days
That were already numbered,
And suddenly
In a cloud of pink mist
His promise was broken.
Now burning eyes look out from dry riverbeds
Studying her ceiling’s imperfections.
Still seeking
An answer,
Reassurance,
A reason to believe
That if not in this life
In another
They’ll be together.
And while she waits
It remains
Between her breasts, the locket,
In her heart, the love.
