In Waking Dreams
7 January, 2015
Author: Ing Twi Demalah
How be it that I cease to breathe
Whenever she draws near to me.
She being the essence of all things desired
a specter of beauty
which, stops the beating hearts of men
and silences the voice of this poet's pen
Sleeping I am haunted
by dreams which pass far to quickly
and in my waking hours, by memories
the smile of her eyes, her hair against my cheek
the sound of her laugh, her arms about me
Such that, I long again to slumber
for it is then seemingly she comes to me
Though I chase not but phantoms of her
And hear her named called soft as a whisper
Beverly, Beverly
Perhaps, the only time she truly sees me
is in those distant shadows of my dreams
Which even awake linger
at the very edge of my reality
Where I tremble and stutter as I try to say
"I am in love with you"
and knew not whether I dreamt
Or if those words I truly spoke
until her voice, sweet and comforting came to me
and she simple said "I Know"
How then can she ask me what I love about her
Or why, when the truth is simply, I do,
Completely, unconditionally, I Do
When dreaming or awake
I love you
