I was young, but now I'm old
Take my time now
Before, I was bold
I was stupid by choice
Could care less 'bout common sense
Now that I'm over the hill
I consider the consequence
Tryin' to grow old with wisdom
Than in numbers only
Cause with each birthday
It's more than just old and gray
Or should be anyway

Suddenly, I was forced to slow down
Than living on fast forward
Always rushing, always late
Not managing times or dates
Not figuring in that decades from now
It doesn't pay to procrastinate
Not taking the time to invest
In what's best but choosing rather to give in
To peer pressure from so-called friends
Trying to show off and impress
Rather than playing less or not at all
Too stubborn to heed to the call
So age caught up with me
And at this late date
I finally see differently
What grandmothers and grandfathers
Who tried to knock sense in me then
Worked so hard to steer me right
When they knew I would give in

So all I can say is
That at my pace I actually enjoy every minute
Of retirement and not having to punch a clock
Taking the advice of the doc
Eating foods for heart health
Maintaining weight and exercise
Thought I would be young forever
But the wrinkles around my eyes
In the mirror confirms truth
That I'm no longer in my youth
If I'm going to spend my last
I'd rather spend it with brains and grace
Forget wishing to relive the past
And reality, embrace
