Friend...

Am I the only one who hesitates
when using or typing the word
"Friend"?
To me, that word is so very, very special;
it is a personal treasure word,
one that is so valuable to me,
one that is something
that I have a difficult time sharing,
as it is such a strong and overpowering word....
Friend.
When I was about twenty years old,
I learned this word too well;
the value of it, the price of it,
the necessity of it...
Today I am protective of the word,
feeling a need to be very sure
to whom I attach the word to,
as, to me, the word "Friend"
is a rare and highly elevated title
to give to a friend...
and if I have a friend
that I call my friend,
I am both very fortunate, and very blessed.
I am also honored.
I equate "friend" with "love"
and with the deep feeling
that I would trade my life
to protect that of my friend,
as they would for me.
That, in short, explains the word.
When I was twenty, I was in Vietnam,
and I learned the meaning
and value of the word "friend."
It goes deeper than most would ever understand.
