If It Is Time

If you're gonna die, my friend,
then do it in such a spectacular way
that it will be discussed and talked about
by total strangers for decades upon decades to come.
None of this simple "lay down
and quietly pass away" shit –
nay - do it with style, with noise and great bangings and violence –
but above all, do it so that it is impressive!
Great, guttural sounds
and all the attraction of watching someone go over Victoria Falls,
sucked by the currents,
and add to that the trumpeting of stampeding
and alarmed African elephants
in the rain forests of Central or Western Africa.
Take no prisoners! Exclaim to the heavens!
Shout out to the gods that watch
that you are what you are,
and let them know
they have no control over you or your feelings or attitude!
Be free to be yourself, and by all means,
bow to no one, to nothing,
other than perhaps to your fates,
as they gather 'round you to close out your world from yourself.
