Sui Generis

Author: Gary Lehmann
So fickle a thing is man that
one of a kind
can mean a prized possession,
unique and special,
possessing qualities both needed and rare,
irreplaceable, not for general consumption,
impeccable, sovereign, and precise,
but at the turn of a leaf
one of a kind
can mean frighteningly odd,
untranslatable, without peer,
and thus without clear value,
unneeded, not generally understood,
impure, aloof, and inaccessible.
So fickle a thing is man.
