This Is It?

Ever have that feeling….
That deep, down, inside “for-certain” feeling…
Like you just KNOW today is it.
Today feels right –
Feels like it’s the last of them.
It’s a weird feeling of certainty,
Not a frightening thing,
Not a sad thing,
Just a definite thing…
‘cause there’s nothing you can do about it –
It is just gonna be what it’s gonna be.
You don’t get a choice –
You just get a seat on that particular bus,
And you ride it.
You know you’re gonna ride it.
It’s what you were born to do –
To ride that bus on this day, today.
You would like to tell everyone in the family
Not to get all torqued out about it –
Nothing personal – it’s just the way it is.
You’re at the table, and there are no more cards to be dealt.
All the coins and bills at your elbow are going to mean nothing to you in a moment,
All the marbles, all the books, all the memories…
Nothing. Nada. Zip.
In a little bit, it will not mean a thing to you,
Because you will not be, any more.
I hope to be able to handle it well.
I don’t want to cry,
But I don’t want to just leave - *poof!* - like that, either.
The two girls in the movie, Thelma and Louise, -
They did it right.
Hell, I can’t even do that much.
But it won’t matter in a little while.
Not to me, anyway.
Hell of a thing, ain’t it?
Seventy-something years,
Then — nothing.
