Thumb

I have a piece of brushed aluminum,
a bit heavy for its size,
that holds some words etched into it...
"When I think of my Dad,
I see sunny summer mornings,
a hot cup of coffee,
and how a "thumb", can say
I love you.
#2 Son,
6/18/2017"
---
this piece of aluminum measures one-half inch in thickness,
three inches wide, and six inches long,
and it weighs right on eleven ounces, polished,
and it could have no more value to me than eleven ounces of purist gold,
nay — it weighs in value ten times that, twenty times that....
a hundred or a thousand times that in value.
It was made and given to me in a time before a moment
that I will always think of as "the chasm,"
and it still holds the value of those moments before that time.
All is not lost,
it is only misplaced for the moment,
and it will be found,
discovered again, if you will,
hopefully before it is too late.
Hopefully before it is too late....
Love does not die - ever.
It does get old, weathered, beaten down,
but it is never vanquished, it never dies.
Sometimes it just needs to be rediscovered again,
cleaned up and polished a bit again,
and placed in a position where it will be seen again as it was intended.
Hopefully, before it is too late.

—Tears cannot dim the beauty of the heart, or drown the parts of life that are the guides along the way... ("thumb...")
