"Give me liberty or give me death"
--Patrick Henry
but do you believe
the smoke’s already risen from the page?
the gun shells
dropped like loose pennies
make soft indents in time
and liberty’s bells
clank together
swing and swerve
chains weighing a ton
a whole chorus
the fresh carcass
that has nothing to do
with turning leaves of books
or finding representation for his heart
to be wrapped in a flag
the stripes the color of his blood
his story bookmarked
he felt it
coming in through the barrel
and was startled.
