Band-aides On My Knee
1 January, 1970

Please stay home daddy and take care of me.
You can’t hold me if you’re in prison or put a band-aide on my knee
What about my birthday daddy, and you’re nowhere around?
You can’t help me blow out the candles or look at the rocks and bugs I found.
And daddy how can I do well in school if I’m always worried and missing you?
Don’t you care how you make me feel or what you put me through?
Do you maybe not really want me? It kind of makes me feel that way.
I’ve been just as good as I can be, so you’ve just got to stay.
I hate that old dope and money, it makes daddies do crazy things.
They forget all about their babies and go away forever or so it seems.
Please don’t do wrong daddy, you have to teach me how to be.
You can’t do that from a prison cell, you have to be home with me.
Hold me daddy, Please hold me, I’ll never let you go.
I love you daddy, I need you, You know that don’t you know?
Oh no daddy, how could you? Now you’ll be gone too long.
You’ll miss my birthday, and won’t get to sing me that song.
Daddy you don’t love me do you? Why are you so mean?
Why do you put “that life” ahead of me? What about my needs?
But daddy, I’ll still wait for you always, hoping you will change.
God’s angels will put a band-aide on my knee until you get your life arranged.

Outstanding Poem

This is truly one of the best poems I have ever read. It touched me b/c I can truly relate to it as I had a father who was locked up for most of my life. keep up the good work.
