The Sun Rises
23 December, 1999
Author: Barbara Gibson
The sun rises up
Over old Serendib
Dogs barking, the wake up call.
All around the noise of the jungle,
Decco lizards run up the wall.
Early morning activity of people passing by
Almond eyed children dressed in blue and white,
Sparkling clean, in the early morning light.
Mothers at the well,
Bringing fresh water for the day.
Father's left for work;
A carpenter, a driver, a coconut climber.
Just another village along the Sri Lankan shore
A pearl in the ocean
Peace at the door
