Ice Bowl
19 September, 2003
Author: Mark Spencer
It was the coldest New Years Eve in Green Bay history.
Which was the better team remained a mystery.
The Packers were the reigning champs for two years in a row.
But could even they endure the bitter cold of Lambeau?
The Cowboys had just one goal, to bring the Packers down.
But Lombardi had other plans, and this was his town.
The Packers took the early lead, it looked like a rout.
But they soon learned what Landry’s Cowboys were all about.
The Pack lead fourteen-zip into the second quarter.
You couldn’t hear much over cheers from their supporters.
But Dallas forced a fumble, and soon were on the board.
Thanks to a second fumble, again the Cowboys scored.
It was fourteen-ten at halftime, that was a shocker.
As worried fans watched their team exit to the locker.
When no one scored in the third, the fans began to pray.
But when Dallas took the lead, there was silence in Green Bay.
With less than five minutes left, the Packers had the ball,
And drove sixty eight yards against that Doomsday Defense wall.
With the defense holding, the Packers searched for a flaw.
And with inches to go they tried a quarterback draw.
Jerry Kramer threw a block, leaving just enough room,
For Starr to cross the goal line and seal the Cowboys doom.
A day in football history, frozen at the scene,
The Packers twenty one, and the Cowboys seventeen.
