I Am God
16 August, 2003
Author: Mark Spencer
Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook,
or press down his tongue with a cord?
Can you pierce his jaw with one mighty tug,
Or lay him to rest with your sword?
Is no one so fierce that he dares such a thing?
Who then among you can stand with me?
Have ye knowledge to come into my presence,
Or understanding to know what you see?
I have heard your boasting as you strut to and fro,
You presume to be equal to me.
Yet you are but a leaf that adorns the branch.
And a leaf is not greater than the tree.
Were you there when the Earth's foundations were laid?
Did you set her pillars in place?
Was it you who weaved the clouds for her garment,
Or made the sun to shine on her face?
If you search and discover that you have talent,
Know then, the limits of that gift.
It can lift you up and it can cast you down,
A journey that is anything but swift.
I created the tools and the materials
Which you use to build your dreams.
I gave you the subjects of your creative passion,
Which flows from you like gentle streams.
Was it not I who gave the picture its color,
Or the music its melody?
Was it you who breathed life into the universe,
And inspired its harmony?
Know that I love you all, though you must learn your place.
Through your empty boasts I can see.
I look past your flimsy walls, deep into your souls.
I am God and YOU are MY poetry.
