The Bible
4 May, 2003
Author: Mark Spencer
The first time I read the Bible,
It left me angry and confused.
By my lack of understanding,
I was baffled and bemused.
Where was my epiphany?
The answers I’d hoped to find?
I thought I’d never understand,
Until the vision filled my mind.
And so I found myself sitting,
On a log beside a lake.
I knew I had to be dreaming,
But my mind felt wide awake.
There beside me sat a stranger
Clad in robes from head to toe.
And with a voice that filled my soul,
He asked what troubled me so.
I don’t understand the Bible,
I said, it confuses me.
So he pointed out at the lake,
And asked me, what do you see?
I told him I just see a lake,
Nothing majestic or grand.
He told me that’s the Bible,
I said, I still don’t understand.
Then he told me to walk over,
Open up my heart and mind,
Put my head into the water,
And prepare for what I’d find.
What I saw caught me by surprise,
I was amazed at the sight.
Of the wonders ‘neath the surface,
That glowed with radiant light.
I sat back down upon the log,
Still reeling from the view.
He said, that too is the Bible,
And at that moment I knew.
I saw the Bible like the lake,
And just read it as a book.
But to see the wonders that it holds,
You must take a deeper look.
If you try to read it with your mind,
You may never reach your goal.
To understand the word of God,
You must read it with your soul.
Then you’ll begin to comprehend,
What the vision said was true.
‘Neath the surface of the Bible,
God’s word will speak to you.

Lori Ann Day (198.81.26.39) -- Wednesday, May 21 2003, 03:56 am I've been through a very similar experience. At one time, I believed that the Old Testament didn't mean much. I could only find relevance in the New Covenant. I didn't realize the value of the prophecies, and that they foreshadowed a greater truth. This is a Word that I can hold a conversation with, and receive answers to my deepest questions, but it only comes at the right time. Sometimes I don't find these treasures until I am truly seeking. Thank you Mark. |
