In God's Defense
23 February, 2003
Author: Mark Spencer
You believe there is no God,
You say there couldn't be.
With all the pain and suffering
Throughout our history.
How then could a loving God
Allow it to go on?
As Innocence is victimized
And children preyed upon.
There's war, disease and starvation,
And e're you catch your breath.
Injustice rears its ugly head,
And then, of course, there's death.
If all it took to save a life
Was just a little rain.
A loving God would let it fall
And not allow such pain.
So you conclude no God exists,
Then turn away forthwith.
Convinced that you now know the truth,
That God is just a myth.
A simple choice, your right to make,
A gift we all receive.
Each one of us has that free will,
To choose what we believe.
But if that choice, we did not take,
Nor God grant us that right.
The Earth would still be paradise,
There'd be no pain or blight.
We would not know good or evil,
Our lives would simply be.
Like characters in some great book,
No choice of destiny.
But God does not deny our right
To take the path we choose.
Whatever peril may await,
That right he won't refuse.
One man tries to kill another,
A mother drowns her child.
Rape and theft, and adultery,
The list has been compiled.
Evil was not the choice of God,
He finds there, no delight.
He lets us choose the course we take
No matter wrong or right.
But He's dismissed without a thought,
Because of what we feel.
For letting us make the wrong choice,
We say he isn't real.
But if you think there is no God
And you needn't hear his voice.
Remember, if he wasn't there
You wouldn't have that choice.
And yes, I know he doesn't need
A man to build his case.
It isn't He who stands to lose
Should we deny his grace.
