Underneath The Stairs
1 June, 2002
Author: Mike Schiller
For far too long I have dwelled
Underneath these stairs
Looking up at the people
as they go about their
lives above my head
I've seen what they experience
I've never known what it is
to be in their shoes
to have a life of my own
Yet I witness it from my
solitary prison
wondering why I have spent my life
living this way
until one day it hits me
I don't need to stay under these stairs
Nobody forces me to say no to myself
I said that to myself
because others kept telling me
to say that to myself
It was not until one day
a new freind spoke to me
and told me I can ascend
this staircase
I can have a life,
I can be one of those people
if only I believe in myself
and include myself
to have the courage to see
the light that seeps down from above
and know that I can pursue that light
know that this light
which pours forth from the sun
pours down to earth
for every one of us
and I too can bask in it
I too can have dreams
and those dreams can come true
This staircase was built by someone
if a staircase can be built
then a staircase can be climbed
and if the staircase falls out
from beneath me
All I need to do is find a way
to repair it
To do that, I must learn how
and something tells me
I'm about to learn a lot
