A Poem For Teachers
1 January, 1970
Author: Miriam Rodriguez
The old man is gasping for breath
He cannot move.
His gaze is lost forever
His eyes do not obey his brain
Be resolute, he says
The teacher in him knows…
There are more lessons
And so little time….
See me as I am… a human
Weak but still trying
So many requests for time
For love and attention
My hours are counted
I am tired but…
“Be not afraid”
Almost in his deathbed
He is graduating
Helping and giving
Then the little child asks
Why, teacher?
The old man
Slurs his words and says
“Sometimes it is necessary to do
Something that is too much”
