False Directions
21 January, 2004
Author: Pamela O'Brien
I have been spending a lot of time with myself lately
Doing a lot of reflecting on where I am in life
And who I really want to be
But it's harder than I thought, to narrow down the essential ingredients of me
It's like going to a foreign country
Where you don't speak the same language
And trying to read the signs
Only none of them give any information about where you want to go
And people along the way are giving you false directions
For the sheer laughter of it all
I'm like a helpless tourist in my own mind
It makes for a difficult situation because when I look in the mirror
It is like staring at a complete stranger
And what's worse is that I used to know
Exactly who I was and what I was capable of
I knew that if those things changed, it would be okay
Because change is good
But I did not expect to get lost in a place that I didn't even know existed
The "unknown" part of myself which refuses to go down without a fight
So I sit here now, contending with myself
And writing to the only person that I think might understand what I am going through
