I meant to say I love you
But instead I let it go
Figuring that you knew
That my feelings needn't show

I meant to say I'll miss you
I can't wait till you get home
But I let the chance go by me
And now I'm all alone

I meant to say have fun dear
to ease that trying business flight
Those long meetings in the day,
being all alone at night

I meant to say the children'll miss you
they truly love thier Dad
They can't wait for a hug at night
without you they're all sad

I meant to say I need you
You're the sunlight in my life
You chase away the clouds
the rain, all that unwanted strife

I meant to say come back soon
Trying to make the days not seem as long
Because I hate it when you're not here
It drives me crazy when you're gone

And I can't believe that I was on the phone
chatting with my friend
When you called to tell me what you meant to say
As it was coming to an end

Your plane was going down somewhere
And your life was going to be cut short
You needed to tell me that you loved me
Since you wouldn't make it to the airport

You didn't want life to get away
Without saying what you meant
You told me all those things about me
that you never would forget

You said you'd wait for me in heaven
But hoped I didn't get there for a while
because I'm needed here on earth
You'd just think about my smile

That's what Johnny told me
Because you called him instead
and told him to tell me
What was running through your head

You only had a few moments
To express what was inside
As you were going down somewhere
because the engine had died

I'd had all morning
And I let it slip away
All those thoughts I'd kept inside
That I didn't think I had to say

But I learned better the hard way
not to keep those thoughts inside
Now that you're no longer with me
and I am not your bride

So before the children leave each day
As they head off to school
I tell them that I love them
And remember that golden rule

That if you want to say it, do it
Tomorrow could be too late
Because I still wish I could have told you
All those things I meant to say
