No More Hugs From Grandpa
23 September, 2002
Author: Sookie
Maria poked a bird today
The bird was dead
she told me it reminded her of grandpa
I nearly wept, but instead
I was a mother
My dad had died just a week ago
my heart was broken
my thoughts were shifted
Maria looked into his casket
and saw his body lying there
"What's wrong with grandpa?", she asked
I didn't know what to say
I wanted to be a good mother
but my heart had been shattered
I explained to her
that grandpa had died
and he wasn't going to talk to her
like he used to
Her eyes looked up to me
being wide open like they always are
and asked
"no more hugs from grandpa?"
"hugs from grandpa
are in the past
but mommy will give you hugs
whenever you think of his"
Again she asked,
"no more hugs from grandpa?"
I answered,
"no, no more hugs from grandpa"
