The Burning Stick
14 May, 2002
Author: Sookie
My older brother said I should take a puff off some burning stick
He said I might like it
My brother went for a drive with his friends
they all had those burning sticks.
They were following an old trend
and when he arrived home, the burning went out quick.
He ignored my parents
and rushed to his room
He sat in there until dinner
and once done, he resumed.
My brother brought a friend home.
relatives were out with our folks
They both had some burning sticks
and wanted to know if I'd smoke
I sat there paralyzed,
not sure what to say
If my older brother thought it was cool
then it must be okay
"yeah" I said
as he gave it to me being soft
Then I breathed in the smoke
and soon I coughed
My brother and his friend,
they held a grin
I felt like crying
but instead decided to join in
my parents came home
and after a while
I told them what had happened
and big brother, he was in denial
"I did not!" he would scream
to my mother
everyone got all mad
this wasn't like my only brother
He'd run to his room
and ignore everyone
and my parents would sit and think
Have I played a part in what he has become?
Mom would sit and cry
and dad would hold her close
as my big, old brother
sat silenced without remorse.
So, this went on
for a few more years
my father became angry
as mom shed more tears
His habit was expensive
as every day he got more addicted
my parents, they buckled down
and big brother was restricted
No more friends
and no more movies
no more girls
until we rid this habit, cold turkey
Big brother, he got all mad
and smoked more and more
he grew to be all nervy
and became very sad.
Cancer invaded his lungs
and big brother became very sick
it was only thing in this world
that could get him away from those sticks
Mommy cried
and this time daddy did too
they said someone had died
and I questioned who
You won't be seeing big brother
any time soon
they said to me
we visited the tomb
where underneath he happened to be
as I entered the first grade
walking through the rain
I sat in a corner
wallowing in my pain.
My older brother said I should take a puff off some burning stick
He said I might like it.
