Christmas Ninety-nine
18 October, 1999
Author: Velma Brown
Torn from its living roots, the evergreen
is dressed in baubles for symbolic fame;
festooned in florid lights, a splendid scene,
each house competing for its own acclaim.
Streets teeming with a multitude, that race
from shop to shop forgetting how to care-
caught in the net of purchase,while the grace
of Noel's message fades into the air.
Loudspeakers beating out explosive sound
to kill the atmosphere; there on the street
a virgin fall of snow trampled and ground
into a dingy slush by hurried feet.
A star shines, but its beckoning is blurred
A choir of angels sing their
praise--unheard.
