A Safe Place

The room feels so big with only two on the couch with TV on
I look around at the paintings, candles lit
And the blinds hiding the outside world
My hand is placed in your and I ask you to take it away
With a questioning look you do as I say
I turn my whole body so your eyes meet mine, face to face
I take a deep breath preparing myself and say,

" Here, this is my heart
It was in my body all alone...but safe
I have taken it out in hopes that you'll protect it
In hopes that you'll love and cherish it
Each and everyday
I imagine this is a big step in your life
As it is in mine
But I'm willing to take the jump
I'm willing to give this heart up
And make you mine"

I manage to place it in your palms
Without backing it away
My heart stops it's beat with your touch
My tears stream slowly down my devastated face
Your hand touches my shoulder
Your eyes wide with excitement
I look down to see my heart's race
You kiss my cheek and wipe my tears
Resting my heart beside yours saying

"Everything will be okay
I put this in a safe place..."

Excellent Insight

I must say, this poem is astounding....notonly have you captureed the moment in a unique way, but you've given it a down-to-earth feel with your description of a heart being something that you physically hand over to someone. This poem is absolutely heart-wrenching and extremely touching.
