Thursday, A Year Ago Today
10 April, 2002
Author: Maranda Berkley
A mother is stricken; her little baby has become ill
She collapses to the floor, resting head in hands
She has nightmares when she sleeps, of her daughters
life filled body still
She climbs the steps slowly to the nursery
Opens the door just a crack, watches the rise and fall
of her baby's back
She notices the time, takes a look at the calendar to
see it's Thursday
~My baby was born one year ago today
Two days later she sits in a waiting room
Family and friend greet her bearing "get well" balloons
But the status of the child is unknown
And her mother's heart becomes undone
The doctor's step is light and no one hears him enter the room
He rests his hand on moms shoulder; she jumps in fright
His words are slow and painful; her child is not all right
Getting up she throws the balloons at her friends
Screams and then cries
Why did my baby have to die?
