Bum
13 January, 2002
Author: Maranda Berkley
I met a bum
On the corner
At a bus stop once
She did not
Stand out in the crowd
In fact if she would not have
Sat beside me
I never would have
Noticed her at all
She was no Cinderella
Her hair was too frizzy
Her nose too big
Her legs too short
She didn't have a brilliant mind
That could comprehend all it desired
She wore plain clothes
And had an equally plain smile
Though somehow we talked for hours
And shared our lives
I could never imagine
Being her friend
This girl was far too plain
For my trends
We said our goodbyes
As the girl boarded the bus
Her destination known
I sat back on the bench
Now all alone
Thinking of the woman I talked to
Just moments before
I remembered her telling me
She had no home
But as she spoke
The smile never once left her face
Because she was going to see her little boy
She didn't desire to be a star
And famous around the world
She knew exactly what she wanted
To be a star in her boy's eyes
In a life of unknowns
She was simply a bum
Before she opened her life to me
I sat on that bench for hours
As people passed me by
Without a glance my way
And I wondered
If I had not a place to stay
Would I be as wise
As the girl I met today
And know just what I want to be
I was still wondering
Through dark corridors of my mind
Searching for the true me
As I looked at the streets
The people
Their minds
I know if I had my life together
Lost all the glitz and glam
That used to be so important to me
And looked at my world
The way the bum had imagined
That girl
On the corner at the bus stop
Would be me
