Love Isn't Everything
13 January, 2003
Author: Sheetswa
Little girl in white, so delicately walking down the isle,
Why do you weep so soon?
Your hair is in curls,
Neck laced in white pearls
And yet so unhappy, it's clear.
You were brought up as an angel,
Living as wealthy as can be,
But what you came to realize was that money wasn't everything.
"Don't go mixing with the niggers" kids from all around would sing,
"They're dirty black servants, they can't be called human beings"
Eventually you found what you had dreamed of,
You found it with pleasure too.
Such a love found once in a life-time, but unwove this very day.
It did not really matter that he had not a wage,
Because a love like this was not worth the waste.
Later they told you,
Of what you had dreaded to hear most.
"He's too dark for you my darling dear,
His bank account is blooming bare"
We'll find you a rich husband, we'll all be happy then.
They found you a filthy rich white husband,
Just as they had promised to do.
They said love was not significant
"When it comes to money, you can always pretend"
But coming to think about it, it's your only destiny.
Walking down the isle now,
You look more beautiful than ever.
Slowly passing rows of grinning faces, you cannot help but think,
Who cares about love after all, to health and prosperity I will drink
Not everyone can be happy and have everything.

I feel this was a "bloody honest" revelation into and from a woman's heart. Don't worry, we have come a long way in reparing, damaged hearts. All it takes is courage! Outstanding, only a poet or poet-et, could share this. Thanks for sharing what I think is pain and shame. Don't cry, many of us have made such a bed, and there we lie. thatis, those of us who will not get up and walk our own heart's path. |
