Oklahoma Girl
19 June, 2003
Author: Ben Laney
She was just a child
When I became her baby
A teen-age bride
Barely turned sixteen
She was pickin' cotton
While I was in the cradle
Living in goverment camps
With the dust-bowl refugees
We used to go fishin'
On the banks of Lake Eastman
We'd camp on a hill
Underneath the stars
When the sun was settin'
And the campfire was blazing
She'd say Sing us a song, son,
Come on, break out your guitar
She believed in Jesus
And guardian Angels
She was counting
On a treasure
A treasure from on high
She used to sit down
At Granny's old piano
And sing those old hymns
About the sweet by and by
Big ol' Oklahoma Girl
With her hands like leather
And eyes that shined like pearls
When she passed from this earth
She left a great big void
In my little corner of the world
That big ol' Oklahoma girl
