The Kitsch Of It All
1 August, 2004
Author: Pondering Red
The fuchsia plum flowery patterns
of your tablecloth
drives me up a wall.
You have a kitsch kitchen.
And the wallpaper-
It’s beige-
Worn out
Dull-old-dry beige.
It’s a kitschy world out there.
Great for pictures-
Zone in on what you want-
Encapsulate a block-
Categorize – freeze-
Option to delete-
Please delete the patterns
on your wall and hall.
I never really noticed
your entranceway.
Perhaps it was
too frightening to look at.
Two murals in flat paint-
Roads going to nowhere-
An alarming attempt
at perspective.
I gaze down at your floors-
Motley green chips of fake marble.
And adorning the walls
of this entranceway-
shiny, glistening square tiles
in rows of brilliant red and black and white.
I’m dizzy.
Let me inhale some air,
There are more clumps of scary patterns
scattered through your house.
I have to look sideways.
And what’s more,
I’m not sure what’s kitsch
or not anymore.
What’s bold or cool-
What’s good colour or design.
My taste is going-
Going fast….
I want to feel
The feng shui vibe of it all again.
What is pleasing to my eye
is now confusing…
I need to exorcise
the kitsch out of my life.

Red Sarah (66.125.109.77) -- Tuesday, August 3 2004, 05:22 am I really like this poem and all of the specific descriptions of the kitsch images. The speaker's reaction to and analysis of the kitsch decorations are also interesting. Especially roads that go nowhere, being dizzy, confusing. Your poem also makes me laugh a little because it reminds me of my apartment :) |
webster (4.250.51.192) -- Wednesday, December 1 2004, 03:29 pm I agree that there is an unending battle against the mundane, boring, clashing, gaudy, and patterns that make one dizzy. What happened to good taste? |
