I used to lie in bed and wonder
If you lay and thought of me
Was I ever in your thoughts
Or had you set that memory free?

Through the years that we’ve been parted
You were always by my side
But all the love I felt within me
I tried desperately to hide

I never thought I’d find you
Or that you could feel the same
But everywhere I went I hoped
I might hear you say my name

Then on that day you sent me
That small note to wish me well
I wish you could have seen my smile
And my heart within me swell

I didn’t want to hope too much
Or read between the lines
That maybe, just maybe there
Was so much more to find

And so we started talking round
And round what we both felt
Slowly things became quite clear
All the doubts began to melt

The first time you said “I love you”
Took my breath away
And suddenly I knew for sure
That your love was here to stay

Now we’re moving forward
And the years apart dissolve
Although we still have far to go
There’s no problem we can’t solve

Our love has come full circle
As it always seems you knew
That we were meant to be together
Forever, me and you

My first wife and I split up nearly 17 years ago. We were young and I was foolish. All these years neither of us stopped loving the other, but never realising the other felt the same. Finally she contacted me, just wanted contact. From there we have grown and our love is stronger than ever. We are in the process of getting back together. This poem is a short testament to that love.
