Fascination
9 September, 2004
Author: Capricorn
You are a quaint creature--
haunted by prehistoric relatives.
Your coat feels rough;
a freckled yellow camouflage,
that mocks the leopard’s skin.
Your enormous eyes
observe my every move,
peering from a shady haven.
Your mouth appears to smile
-- a false welcome.
I offered friendship’s hand,
but stricken by fear
your breath quickens
as you skitter off
to your safe sanctuary
I spent tireless times
to win your trust.
Now you clamber on
my open hand
and your breath flows
in a slow rhythm --
you know I mean no harm.
Fascination forms
our friendship.
I’ll feel bereft
when you have left this world
-- my tears will spill.
